The Euro class and the Romanian e-vignette price

From 1 October 2026, the e-vignette price has four levels based on the Euro class: electric, Euro 6, Euro 4–5 and Euro 0–3. For a car, the 12-month e-vignette costs between 228 and 330 lei, depending on the Euro class.
Vehicles registered in Romania
For a Romanian number plate you do not need to look up the Euro class: when you buy, the category and the Euro class are filled in from the vehicle register. The Euro class is also shown in the vehicle identity card (CIV).
Vehicles registered in other countries
For a foreign number plate, you select the Euro class yourself, based on the vehicle documents. Where to find it:
- EU countries, in general: the registration certificate, field V.9.
- Hungary: field V.9 contains a numeric code: 15 or 16 = Euro 6, 14 = Euro 5, 9–11 = Euro 4, 6–8 = Euro 3. Code 5 means electric, gas or hybrid propulsion; field P.3 decides.
- Germany: field 14 (e.g. “EURO 6”) and the code in field 14.1 (36… = Euro 6, 35… = Euro 5). The environmental sticker (Umweltplakette) does not show the Euro class.
- Austria: field V.9 (“Abgasverhalten nach/Stufe”).
- Bulgaria: field V.9 “Екологична категория”. The “Еко категория” from the roadworthiness test is something else.
- Poland: field V.9 or the entry under “Adnotacje urzędowe”.
If the Euro class is not shown: the certificate of conformity (CoC) or the manufacturer, based on the VIN.
If the Euro class cannot be proven
Law 226/2023 (Art. 6(3)) states that, in the absence of data on the Euro class, the vehicle is classified as Euro 0. The valid e-vignette is the one that corresponds to the actual Euro class; do not select a better Euro class than the one in the documents.
Electric vehicles
An electric vehicle without a Euro class is classified according to the energy source in the registration certificate (field P.3). Electric vehicles are not exempt from the e-vignette, but they pay the lowest fee. A hybrid with an internal combustion engine is, as a rule, classified according to the Euro class in the documents.
