Fine for not having a Romanian e-vignette
Last checked: 1 November 2026
Driving on the national roads without a valid Romanian e-vignette is a minor offence. The fine is not a fixed amount: it is between two and four times the 12-month e-vignette fee for the vehicle concerned (Law 226/2023, Art. 18(2)).
Indicative amounts

Calculated on the basis of the fees in Order MTI No. 888/2026; the amount of the fine is updated annually.
How the offence is detected
- Video cameras on the national roads: the owner is identified by the number plate.
- Checks by the traffic police, ISCTR, the border police and CNAIR, including at border crossing points.
Romanian and foreign vehicles
For a vehicle registered in Romania and detected by cameras, the offence report is drawn up in the driver's absence and notified within two months at most. For a vehicle registered abroad, the fine is imposed on the spot.
The offence is a continuing one: it lasts for as long as you drive without a valid e-vignette. The simplest protection is to check your e-vignette before the journey and to buy it in good time.
